The list is growing unstoppably: Three pilots have died in the last three weeks.
AIR CANADA – Ottawa, Ontario – March 3, 2024 – 55-year-old pilot Anand Acharya has passed away after a nearly two-year battle with a brain tumor. He was a PhD and an Air Canada Boeing 777 pilot.
DELTA – NYC – February 16, 2024 – Captain Geoffrey John Brock, 58, passed away unexpectedly on February 16, 2024 during a layover in Honolulu, HI.
DELTA – NYC – February 15, 2024 – Michael David O'Leary, 41, passed away unexpectedly after a six week battle with cancer. In 2022, Mike O'Leary began working for Delta Airlines at JFK Airport in New York, flying domestic and international routes in the US and around the world.
Death of a pilot in 2024- February 2024 - United Airlines Pilot - US Air Force Maj. Matthew Charles Kettler, 39, of Mason, Ohio, and a current United Airlines pilot, died suddenly on February 12, 2024.
Death of a pilot at work in 2023
- September 2023 – Death of an Alaska Airlines pilot – 37-year-old Captain Eric McRae died suddenly in his hotel room during a layover where he was scheduled to fly that morning.
- August 2023 – IndiGo Flight (NAG-PNQ) from Nagpur to Pune, India: 40-year-old pilot Manoj Subramanium died after crashing on the exit shortly before boarding.
- August 2023 – Qatar Airways Flight QR579 (DEL-DOH) from Delhi to Doha, Qatar, the 51-year-old pilot collapsed as a passenger during the flight and died, the aircraft was diverted to Dubai.
- August 2023 – LATAM Flight LA505 (MIA-SCL) from Miami to Santiago, Chile – 2 hours into the 8 hour flight, 56 year old Captain Ivan Andaur collapses and dies in the toilet – the plane is diverted to Panama City!
- July 2023 – Small Aircraft – A 2006 Piper Meridian, en route from Westchester, New York, crashed at Martha's Vineyard Airport after the pilot suffered a medical emergency on approach and a passenger took control of the aircraft and attempted to land . The pilot, 79-year-old Randolph Bonnist, later died in hospital.
- June 2023 – Small plane – Cessna Citation N611VG on flight from Tennessee to Long Island, fighter jets notice pilot unconscious in cockpit, plane crashes killing all passengers.
- May 2023 – Air Transat and Air Canada pilot Eddy Vorperian (48) died suddenly during a layover in Croatia.
- March 2023 – A British Airways (CAI-LHR) pilot died of a heart attack at the crew hotel in Cairo before a flight from Cairo to London (name and age not released)
Disability and death of military pilots- July 2023 – U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Andrew James Lingenfelter, 37, of Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, passed away on July 19, 2023, after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
- May 2023 – United Airlines and US Air Force pilot Col. Michael Fugett, 46, died suddenly at home.
Deaths of pilots (off-duty)
- December 2023 – Singapore Airlines – Captain Lee Meng Chye Martin passed away suddenly.
- December 5, 2023 - Volaris (El Salvador) Pilot - Jose Espinal, 30, a pilot for Volaris (El Salvador), Air Jazeera Airways (Kuwait) and formerly VECA and TACA Airlines, died suddenly on December 5, 2023.
- November 16, 2023 - Air India Pilot - 37-year-old Air India pilot Captain Himanil Kumar suffered a cardiac arrest at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport during training.
- October 18, 2023 - Austrian Airlines Pilot - Christian Zimmerebner, 43, an Austrian Airlines AUA pilot and member of the Dorfgastein Mountain Rescue Team, died suddenly on October 18, 2023, following a "severe illness".
- May 2023 – 4 Singapore Airlines pilots died suddenly in May 2023.
- 26 May 2023 - Singapore Airlines Pilot - Captain Sebestian Tan Aik Chuang: Died 26 May 2023 (cancer)
- 25 May 2023 - Singapore Airlines Pilot - Captain Tan Joo Huat Colin: Died 25 May 2023 (suddenly)
- 24 May 2023 - Singapore Airlines Pilot - Captain Fernando Cid: Died 24 May 2023 (cancer)
- 11 May 2023 - Singapore Airlines Pilot - Captain Wee Loong: Died 11 May 2023 (Sudden Death)
- April 13, 2023 – Phil Thomas, a graduate of the Flight Training Pilot Academy in Cadiz, Spain (FTEJerez), has died suddenly.
- March 17, 2023 - Westjet pilot - Benjamin Paul Vige, 39, died suddenly in Calgary
Unfortunately, the list is getting bigger and bigger every day, so far there is no indication that its growth will stop.
