Bitka petih vojska je veličasten zaključek pustolovščin Bilba Bisagina, Thorina Hrastoščita in druščine škratov.
Od zmaja Smauga so si priborili nazaj domovino, a so pri tem nehote osvobodili smrtonosno silo. Razbesneli Smaug svoj ognjeni bes znese nad nemočnimi možmi, ženskami in otroki Jezernega mesta. Thorin, ki ga bolj kot vse drugo obseda vnovič pridobljeno bogastvo, žrtvuje prijateljstvo in čast, da si nagrabi zlata, medtem ko vročično prizadevanje, da bi prijatelja spravil k pameti, Bilba privede do skrajne in nevarne odločitve. A druščino čakajo še hujše nevarnosti. Veliki sovrag Sauron, ki ga vidi le Gandalf, je v pritajeni napad na Samotno goro poslal vojsko orkov. Nad čedalje hujši spopad se spušča tema, škratje, vilini in ljudje se morajo odločiti, ali bodo združili moči ali pa se bodo soočili z uničenjem. Bilbo se znajde sredi boja za lastno življenje in za življenja prijateljev v Bitki petih vojska, od katere je odvisna prihodnost Srednjega sveta.
