V ameriškem mestecu New Chatham se tudi za žalujočo družino Boyajian bližajo božični prazniki.

Oče George, mama Carol in njuna hčerka Jean nimajo želje po praznovanju. Še zdaj žalujejo za sinom, ki je umrl na božični večer med zalivsko vojno. A letos bodo prazniki drugačni. George naleti na mladeniča Matthewa, ki nima strehe nad glavo. Povabi ga k sebi domov in ga prosi, naj se pred Carol pretvarja, da je poznal njunega pokojnega sina. Matthew pristane in tako žalujoči družini pripravi kar nekaj presenečenj, ki vsem po vrsti vrnejo vero v življenje.
